Modes of Identification: Iris scanning

The iris of the eye (the colored ring around the pupil) is a unique identifying feature of an individual. Iris identification uses 2,048 points on the eye using non-invasive digital capture techniques

  • Iris identification has a number advantages as a component of biometric identification
    • Iris identification is a high level identification method conducted by subject matter experts
    • It can be used to verify “proof of life” photos in kidnap/ransom situations
  • Cons
    • Iris identification cannot be used as a stand-alone method of identification
    • The iris degrades shortly after death, so this method of identification is not useful in disaster situations
