Modes of Identification: Facial Recognition
The SFE Biometric Identification profile includes ultra-high resolution photography of the face and head. This allows for identification in both disaster and kidnapping scenarios.
- The advantages of facial recognition for biometric identification include:
- Data can be gathered and submitted for automated analysis of video surveillance
- Data can be altered in consideration of changes in age, weight gain, or facial hair
- Skeletal superimposition can be used to help identify skeletal remains.
- Disadvantages of facial recognition include:
- It may not be useful in cases of disfigurement
- Distinguishing characteristics not universal
- It is less exact than other methods of biometric identification, and false identification is possible; in cases of scanning for terror suspects at public events, 1 in 100 captures is falsely identified
