2012-09-01 | Chile Admits Irregularities in Identifying Disappeared Persons
Santiago, Chile, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Chilean authorities admitted today the persistence of irregularities in the identification of bodies of the disappeared, with the resulting trauma for relatives, victims of the genocide committed by the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990). These irregularities will mean that 14 families will have to return the remains of those they thought were their beloved ones, as already happened in 2006, according to www.biobiochile.cl.

Houti was kidnapped in front of his house in Housh Al-Ghanam village in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley last Saturday. The kidnappers contacted the father of his Lebanese wife (he is also married to a Kuwaiti and an American) and demanded $2 million in ransom for releasing him. After intense pressure was put on the kidnappers from the Lebanese government, Houti was released without paying any ransom. “As far as I know, I was told that no ransom was paid to release me, although I was kidnapped for money and not for any political or religious reason,” he stated after his arrival yesterday.

The two American workers were taken to a hospital in the nearby resort city of Cuernavaca. One had a gunshot wound in his leg and the other was wounded in the stomach and a hand, said a Mexican government official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Hospital officials in Cuernavaca said the wounded were later transferred to a hospital in Mexico City in stable condition.
